Japan is set to revolutionize travel for foreign visitors with the launch of the Welcome Suica mobile app on March 6, 2025. This app offers a seamless, digital alternative to the traditional physical Suica card, designed to make navigating Japan’s transport system easier and more convenient for international tourists.
The Welcome Suica app functions as a digital travel card, allowing users to make electronic payments on public transport such as trains and buses, and even at convenience stores, vending machines, and select restaurants. What sets the app apart is its extended validity: unlike the physical Suica card, which is valid for only 28 days, the digital card provides a 180-day validity period, offering tourists a longer and more flexible experience.
Currently, the app is available for iOS users, who can download it on their iPhones and Apple Watches. Prior to this launch, tourists had to purchase a physical Suica card at JR East’s Travel Service Centres or at vending machines located at Narita International Airport and Haneda Airport in Tokyo. With the introduction of the Welcome Suica mobile app, travelers can now access these services directly from their smartphones, without needing to carry physical cards.
