In a bid to further enhance rail transport between the two nations, Lao and Thai prime ministers signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on February 21, 2025 in Bangkok, underscoring their commitment to strengthening technical cooperation in passenger rail transport. This agreement follows a successful period from July 2024 to January 2025, during which 288,700 passengers used the rail service, showcasing the growing popularity of rail travel.
The signing ceremony, presided over by Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, took place in the presence of senior government officials. Prime Minister Sonexay’s official visit to Thailand, at the invitation of his Thai counterpart, was aimed at enhancing the Strategic Partnership for Growth and Sustainable Development between the two countries.
The MOU is seen as a key step in improving regional connectivity and fostering stronger ties between Laos and Thailand.
