On the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the UK has imposed a new round of travel sanctions targeting key allies of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The Home Office announced an expansion of measures aimed at Russian elites closely linked to the Kremlin. The sanctions include restrictions on local and federal politicians, as well as managers and directors of major Russian companies. This action adds to previous travel bans on high-profile figures like Roman Abramovich.
Security Minister Dan Jarvis emphasized that the new sanctions were designed to increase pressure on Russia as the war approaches its fourth year. He stated, “We are shutting the door to oligarchs who have profited from the suffering of the Russian people while funding the war.”
Jarvis made it clear that the message to Putin’s associates was strong: “You are not welcome in the UK.”
When asked about the significance of the UK’s sanctions if the US did not follow suit, Jarvis told Sky News, “This is not irrelevant. It is a way of tightening the pressure on Russia.”
