Monmouthshire County Council Launches Caldicot Active Travel Scheme

by Mary

Monmouthshire County Council is set to begin work on the Caldicot Active Travel Scheme on March 17, aiming to promote walking, cycling, and other forms of active transport for short, everyday journeys.

The initiative is part of the council’s broader strategy to create community environments that are safe, convenient, and attractive for active travel. By enhancing local pathways and crossings, the scheme seeks to provide a cost-effective alternative to driving while improving road system efficiency for drivers who still need to use vehicles.

The Woodstock Way scheme, a key component of this project, has been developed in response to local needs identified by the council and various other organizations. These needs include the demand for safer routes and crossing points for pedestrians, cyclists, and wheelchair users.

As part of the project, the council will upgrade paths and crossings along Woodstock Way to improve safety, quality, and reduce congestion. The plans also include a redesigned road layout to incorporate a shared-use active travel path.

Public consultations held last year provided residents and students at Caldicot School with an opportunity to share their views on the development plans. The feedback helped shape the design and prioritization of the improvements.

Councillor Sara Burch, cabinet member for rural affairs, housing, and tourism, expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming work. “It’s great to see the work on Woodstock Way beginning,” she said. “As a council, we are looking to secure the best possible routes for our residents and visitors to utilize while traveling within our towns.”

The upgrades will include repositioned bus stops at Gray Hill Surgery, improved crossing facilities, tactile paving, and upgraded signage. The council is working closely with Wales & West Utilities and Monmouthshire Housing Association to minimize disruption during construction.

This project is a significant step toward making Caldicot a more active and sustainable town, fostering safer, more accessible travel options for the local community.
