New ETA Requirement for Travelers to the UK Starts April 2

by Mary

Starting on April 2, travelers heading to the United Kingdom will be required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). The application process opened to Estonian citizens on March 5.

Each traveler, including children, must apply for their own ETA. The authorization is valid for up to two years, as long as the passport used for travel does not expire before that time. With the ETA, visitors can stay in the UK for up to six months per trip.

The application process takes about three days and must be completed individually for each person. The easiest way to apply is via a mobile app or online, and the cost is £10.

Travelers who are just transiting through the UK, such as those passing through London without leaving the transit zone, do not need to apply for an ETA. However, if the transfer requires leaving the transit zone or changing airports, an ETA is necessary. Travelers should check with their airline to confirm if they need to exit the transit zone during their transfer.

The UK is a popular destination for Estonians. In 2024, approximately 65,000 Estonian residents visited the UK, according to mobile data from the Bank of Estonia.
