A group helping Afghan refugees with resettlement has warned that the United States could impose a travel ban on Afghan nationals and others in the coming weeks.
AfghanEvac, the organization assisting refugees, urged Afghans with valid U.S. visas and travel documents to enter the country as soon as possible. The warning follows information from sources within the U.S. State Department.
“We are hearing from internal sources at the State Department that a travel ban on Afghan nationals (and others) may be implemented as early as next week,” the group stated on X.
AfghanEvac added that it does not yet have full details about the potential restrictions but will share updates as more information becomes available.
Shawn VanDiver, director of AfghanEvac, expressed concern that Afghan citizens may not be able to enter the U.S. even with valid visas if the restrictions are enacted.
The details of the potential ban, including its legal and policy framework, remain unclear.
This warning comes as several countries, including Pakistan and Iran, have ramped up deportations of undocumented Afghan migrants in recent months.
