A new report by Canvas8, a global strategic insights firm, reveals that Australians are prioritizing travel experiences that offer value and meaning, even as the cost of living continues to challenge households across the country.
The research highlights a shift in how Australians approach travel, with many rethinking their travel plans to focus on budget-friendly experiences that offer personal fulfillment. According to Skyscanner’s 2025 behavioral and industry trend report, more Australians are seeking to balance work and play through workcations and local getaways.
The Canvas8 report, titled “Why Aussies Find Ways to Travel Even on a Tight Budget”, was authored by Australian writer Heidi Bain and includes insights from experts such as Donna Berry, head of commercial revenue at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary on Queensland’s Gold Coast, and Brendon Matthews, owner of Ballina Heritage Inn in New South Wales.
The experts found that, despite financial pressures, Australians are being creative in their travel choices, seeking experiences that align with their passions.
“When things get tough, Australians are more selective about what they spend on, and experiences are what will create great memories,” said Berry. “We have animal encounters like breakfast with the koalas, and after COVID, bookings have really increased because it leaves them with a special memory.”
